Rebuild your cartilage with eggshell membrane

Seriously folks, when I say you need to check out the power of eggshell membrane for treating your creaking joints, I mean right now!
This little known arthritis remedy is growing in popularity within the arthritis community and has been shown to quickly reduce pain and increase joint flexibility by up to 27% in just 7 days.

Eggshell membrane (ESM) is having a fantastic effect on my arthritis and I can reliably report a whole host of improvements including, an increased range of motion, decreased pain, and an increased level of athletic ability. Eggshell membrane has helped me lift more weight, exercise for longer, increase my range of motion, and as a result, has increased my overall levels of wellness.

Below is the science to prove that little-known eggshell membrane really does rebuild cartilage.

The eggshell membrane trial

Eleven subjects, 6 male and 5 female, were enrolled in a trial that studied the efficacy of taking 500 mg of eggshell membrane orally per day.  After treatment assessments were made in each patient for the following areas: pain at the knees (3), hips (1), elbows (1), neck (1), shoulders (1), and lower back (4)

Researchers used the Likert scale to determine the pain scores in the patients’ joints and this included measurements for general pain, pain when flexing the joint, and for improvements in the patient’s range of motion.

After taking the supplement daily at home, the participants reported back to the clinic on day 7 and day 30 to be put through range of motion exercises and to describe their pain and range of movement.

The results were staggering, to say the least.

Results

Statistical analysis revealed that supplementation with eggshell membrane produced a 27.8% increase in range of motion after just 7 days and a 72.5% reduction in general pain at 30 days, flexibility was increased by 43.7% and range of motion-associated pain decreased by an average of 75.9%.

A second arm of the study, carried out using 28 subjects, used two different formulations of eggshell membrane. The supplements were designated as formulations X and Y and differed in the way they were partially hydrolyzed prior to final ingredient mixing.

Both supplement formulations X and Y were shown to produce significant benefits in the patients at the 7-day point. Reduction in pain was recorded at 18.4% for X and 31.3% for the Y varieties of the formulations. The Y variety was then discontinued because it was so effective and the study then crossed over to using the X variety for the remainder of the study. The benefits of using the x variety continued to grow, with pain reduction being measured at 30.2% after 30 days.

What’s the deal with eggs?

I talk a lot about the egg being “nature’s vitamin” but I usually talk about the yummy yolk in the center. Until now, I hadn’t realized how powerfully nutritious the “throwaway” membrane inside the shell is for treating arthritis.

However, don’t rush off to the bin to rescue the broken eggshells just yet.

The eggshell membrane used in the test was processed to high potency and refined in a process that doesn’t damage the vital compounds required to rebuild cartilage. This could mean that no matter how many eggshell membranes you peel from your eggs, you may not feel the same benefit as taking the supplement.

What is the ESM secret?

Eggshell membrane supplements are composed mainly of fibrous proteins such as:

  • Collagen type I (25%)
  • Dermatan sulfate
  • Chondroitin sulfate
  • Sulfated glycoproteins
  • Hexosamines
  • Glucosamine
  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Sialic acid
  • Desmosine
  • Isodesmosine
  • Ovotransferrin
  • Lysyl oxidase
  • Lysozyme
  • β-N-acetylglucosaminidase

Right there you have all the natural ingredients for maintaining connective tissue and with the best of care, you could even rebuild your cartilage with eggshell membrane.

It is impossible to say how many of these arthritis-busting compounds end up in the final ESM product, but I’m sure we’ll soon see more studies published on the levels of active components contained in ESM.
All I know is it seems to work for me, but always check the label for any indications of potency or for the use of heat-based production methods which may decrease the levels of the heat-sensitive compounds mentioned above.

Eggshell membrane, A new source of collagen?

The breakthrough in finding a new natural source of combined collagen, glucosamine, chondroitin, and hyaluronic acid has to be considered a real discovery of merit because most of us already supplement with these products and know them to be safe and beneficial.

These three arthritis-fighting compounds are found in their Natural state in the eggshell membrane, they may also turn out to be more bioavailable and contain fewer fillers than some of the traditional supplements we take.
More research is needed before we can make any distinctions on that front, but I do like the way ESM feels as a product. Of course, you will still need to take a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement to nudge you up to your desired daily levels, but this supplement feels more natural to me and certainly lowers pain levels.

An extra food safety boost!

ESM allows us to get our collagen from non-bovine (cow) sources and for me, that is a real bonus. Ultimately, It means the product isn’t boiled to death from all kinds of gross animal parts or subject to the potential problems of BSE infection. Whilst the possibility of BSE infection from bovine collagen seems remote to almost zero, it has been suggested it could theoretically happen. That is not something I’m willing to take a chance on after working so hard to get well and casts a bit of a cloud over some animal products for me.

Human Collagen makes up around 25% of the human body’s “dry weight”

The conclusion

Eggshell membrane certainly has a lot to offer those of us who suffer from joint and connective tissue problems. This totally natural and easy-to-use supplement is inexpensive, easy to use, and has shown no side effects up until now. The obvious precautions exist like not eating this stuff if you’re allergic to eggs. Other than that, ESM seems to be safe with the study reporting ESM to be well tolerated.

Some concerns are raised by the limited scope and range of the study. I am not saying that this data isn’t valuable or the study wasn’t well designed, or well carried out, but rather that the study was designed to look for improvements in a variety of arthritic conditions and other more targeted studies may report different findings.  That said, the results are very encouraging.

The study also allowed the participants to use “other pain medication” during the 7 and 30-day trials, which wasn’t ideal. During clinical trials which could result in pain or distress for the patient this practice is quite common, and whilst taking pain medication seemed to be very low asking patients to record their painkiller use at home isn’t ideal. The painkilling medication was used just once every 20–22 days on average. The total rate of compliance was said to be 98%.

Personally, I have received great relief from using eggshell membrane and can’t speak highly enough of its all-around ability to reduce joint pain and symptoms. Try it for yourself and see if it improves your symptoms.
